These mussels are cultivated responsibly at two locations on the Maine coast, Clapboard Island and Bangs Island, utilizing sustainable aquaculture practices. The farms are a series of rafts, each with hundreds of specially designed “droppers” that provide a safe habitat for the mussels to grow. Bangs Island Mussels start their lives as wild juvenile mussel seeds nurtured in the protection of rafts until they are ready to harvest.

Bang’s Island mussels are rope grown, and the highest environmental standards are followed in every aspect of this business, including a fleet that runs on biodiesel.

Did you know that mussels are good for the ocean? They are highly effective filter feeders that improve the water quality around them just by growing and living. That makes them an excellent and delicious protein source!
