IMPACT: Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill
On April 20, 2010, there was a grand explosion on the Deepwater Horizon, a floating drilling rig, in the Gulf of Mexico. Two days later, the rig sank over 5,000 feet to the bottom causing a leak in the well. Crews have been working around the clock but have not been able to fix the leak as of yet. The path of the oil slick is yet to be determined by the winds and tides of the ocean.
How Will This Impact Our Seafood?
- Larger fish, such as Mahi Mahi, Grouper and Swordfish, are able to swim away from the moving oil slick formed on top of the water.
- Availability of Crabs, Oysters and Shrimp could potentially be affected. Prices are guaranteed to increase due to summer demand of these items and lack of availability.
Please see your Adelphia sales representative about further questions about availability and prices.
Market Update: Pasteurized Crab
5/10/2010
Pasteurized crabmeat prices are increasing and availability is decreasing dramatically. The Asian crab market does not officially go on conservation until June however fishermen are not fishing for crabs until October. Poor catch levels are keeping fishermen and their boats at the docks.
Market Update: Domestic Shrimp
5/10/2010
Domestic shrimp availability and price are radically changing everyday. The effects of the recent oil spill on the shrimp season are yet to be determined. We do know that the availability of domestic shrimp is very limited and prices are increasing. Larger shrimp in particular are scarce and expensive. Be prepared for prices on imported shrimp to increase as a result.
